British port workers strike for 8 days

Workers at the British port of Felixstau have begun an 8-day strike demanding higher wages.

The BBC has reported that around 1,900 workers are on strike for 8 days at the UK’s largest container port.

The union said the strike would last until 10 p.m. local time for the eight days of the strike. The strike is the first of its kind at the port in 30 years, as some 2,550 people work for 48% of container shipping in the United Kingdom, according to the network.

Port spokesman Paul Davey called the strike “disappointing”, stressing that the workers had rejected the operator’s offer of a 7 percent wage increase, in addition to each worker receiving a £500 ($591) lump sum payment. ).

In Britain, there is a wave of strikes, including railway and subway workers, as well as train drivers, in protest against the high cost of living and high inflation in the country.
