The White House announced that President Joe Biden intends to deprive Afghanistan of “a major non-NATO ally of the United States.”
The White House statement said Biden informed Congress of his decision to “remove the inclusion of Afghanistan on the list of key non-NATO allies.”
Notably, the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021 before the completion of the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
The US has not recognized the legitimacy of the new government that the Taliban announced last September.
