Beijing commented on Guterres’ statements on referendums in Donbas and liberated territories of Ukraine

China reaffirmed its commitment to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries and called on all parties involved in the Ukrainian conflict to resolve differences through dialogue and consultation.

About this today, on Friday, at a briefing by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin in response to a request to comment on the statements of UN Secretary General António Guterres in the UN Security Council, where he expressed concern about plans to hold referendums, considering that “any annexation of the territory of one country the other as a result of the threat or threat of force is a violation of the Charter of the United Nations and international law.”

“We have repeatedly explained China’s position on the Ukrainian issue. We always support the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, abide by the basic purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, take the security concerns of each country seriously, and support all efforts to promote a peaceful resolution of the crisis,” Wang said.

“China calls on all parties concerned to properly resolve differences through dialogue and consultation, and is willing to work with the international community to continue to play a constructive role in helping to de-escalate the situation,” the official said.

Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed in a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov that his country would continue to take an “objective and fair” stance on the Ukraine crisis, and also called for the resumption of negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv without preconditions, stressing that protracting the crisis is not beneficial to anyone.
