18 people killed in riots in Karakalpakstan

As a result of mass riots in the Uzbek region of Karakalpakstan, 18 people were killed and 243 people were injured, Abrur Mamatov, a spokesman for the Uzbek prosecutor’s office, said.

Mamatov said live on the Uzbekistan 24 TV channel that as a result of the riots that took place in Nukus on July 1-2, 18 people were killed, 243 people were injured of varying severity, including 38 law enforcement officers.

Unsanctioned protests against constitutional amendments took place in Uzbekistan, which then escalated into riots and violence, resulting in casualties and injuries among civilians and law enforcement officers. For its part, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan said that the security forces managed to restore order in the city, and local authorities authorized the detention of rioters who tried to seize power in the city. President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirmizoev declared a state of emergency in the region from July 3 to August 2.
