World Food Program announces diet cuts in Africa

The United Nations World Food Program has announced dietary cuts in East and West Africa.

The organization said in a statement that it was forced to cut food rations for refugees in several East African countries due to a lack of funding.

The cut to 50% will affect three-quarters of the refugees receiving World Food Program assistance in East Africa. Refugees from Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan, and Uganda have suffered the most.

The WFP said in a statement: “Severe financial difficulties in West Africa, where famine is at its highest level in a decade, have forced WFP to cut food rations for refugees living in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger.” More A reduction in rations will be inevitable.”

As global hunger exceeds the resources available to feed all families in dire need of WFP’s assistance, we are forced to make the difficult decision to cut food rations for refugees who depend on us for survival.

Without urgent new funding to support refugees, one of the world’s most vulnerable groups will face hunger, and they may pay with their lives,” said UNICEF Executive Director David Beasley.

The program helped 10 million refugees worldwide in 2021, and an organization in East Africa needs $411 million to support refugees over the next six months. For West African countries, this figure is $76.5 million.

In mid-June, the World Food Program suspended relief operations in South Sudan, where 60 percent of the population suffers from nutritional problems.
