Women’s World Cup misses Team USA captain Sauerbrunn

According to several press reports, Becky Sauerbrunn, captain of the US national team, world champion in the last two editions, will miss the upcoming Women’s World Cup due to a foot injury.

Earlier this month, the 38-year-old defender suffered a national championship setback with her Portland Thorns following an injury she suffered in April, according to sources told ESPN and The Athletic.

The next World Championship will be held in Australia and New Zealand starting July 20th.

Team USA coach Vlatko Andonovsky is expected to announce his squad for the World Cup in the coming days.

She has 216 international caps to her Sauerbrunn credit and helped US women win world titles in Canada in 2015 and France in 2019.

Sauerbrun also contributed to winning gold at the 2012 London Olympics and third place at the recent Tokyo Olympics.
