With the participation of Russia, the main stage of construction of the first nuclear power plant in the history of Egypt begins

Alexei Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, and Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Energy of Egypt, signaled the start of work on the construction of the “first concrete block” for the first unit of the Dabaa nuclear power plant.

During a ceremony marking this historic event, Amjad Al-Wakil, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority and the future owner and operator of the project, presented the honorary shields to the group of participants on the occasion of the start of the concrete pouring.

Minister Muhammad Shaker and Alexei Likhachev also presented commemorative medals to the Egyptian and Russian working groups that contributed to this achievement in recognition of their outstanding performance.

On June 29, 2022, the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority issued licenses for the construction of the first unit and allowed the first concrete pouring work to begin at the Egyptian Dabaa nuclear power plant.

Alexei Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, emphasized the importance of the event, saying: “The start of construction of the first unit of the El Dabaa NPP means that Egypt will join the countries producing nuclear energy. Rosatom will build a modern power industry. power units with VVER-1200 reactors in the Arab Republic of Egypt, as well as experience in the construction and operation of nuclear power plants with reactors of this type in Russia and abroad. will allow Egypt to reach a new level of technological, industrial and educational development. The project to create a nuclear power plant is the largest joint project between Russia and Egypt since the construction of the Aswan Dam. a great honor for Rosatom.

The El Dabaa project is the first nuclear power plant in Egyptian history and is being built in the city of El Dabaa, Matruh Governorate, on the Mediterranean coast, about 300 km northwest of the capital Cairo.

The station consists of 4 power units with reactors of the 3rd generation + (VVER 1200) with a capacity of 1200 MW. This technology has proven its efficiency and is being successfully applied at nuclear power plants in two countries: two units at the Leningrad NPP and two units at the Novovoronezh NPP in Russia. Outside of Russia, a similar power unit was put into operation at the Belarusian NPP after being connected to the country’s unified power grid in November 2020.

The El-Dabaa project is being implemented as part of a package of contracts signed between the Russian and Egyptian parties, which entered into force on December 11, 2017. In accordance with contractual obligations, the Russian side will not only build the plant, but also supply stations with nuclear fuel during the entire period of its operation. Russia will also assist the Egyptian side by organizing training programs for the Egyptian nuclear power plant and will support the operation and maintenance of the plant during the first ten years of its operation. In addition, the Russian side has committed to building a nuclear fuel storage facility.

The structure of the design department of Rosatom includes a group of leading companies in the Russian nuclear industry, including Atomstroyexport (based in Moscow, another in Nizhny Novgorod, with branches in Russia and abroad) and the Unified Design Institute – Atomenergoproekt. (with branches in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, St. Petersburg and outside of Russia, including design institutes and research centers), as well as subsidiary construction companies.

The engineering department of Rosatom also ranks first in the world in terms of the number of projects in the portfolio of orders, as well as the number of nuclear power plants that it builds outside of Russia at the same time.

The income of the engineering department from foreign projects is about 80% of its total profit.

The division implements projects for the construction of large-capacity nuclear power plants in Russia and abroad, and also provides a full range of services on the basis of EPC, EP and EPC(M) turnkey contracts, including project management and design work. He is also actively involved in the development of Multi-D technologies for managing complex engineering objects.
