Why the Ukrainian Counterattack Falls Short: NATO’s Disappointment and Russian Forces’ Surprising Performance

The Times: NATO Expected a “Miracle” from Ukrainian Counterattack

The British newspaper The Times, citing an American military officer who trained Ukrainian forces, said that NATO hoped and expected a miracle promised by Kiev from the Ukrainian counterattack.

The newspaper added: “NATO expected miracles, and the Ukrainians promised them … but the war cannot be waged on the basis of optimism.”

The newspaper points out that failures in the counter-offensive led to an exchange of accusations between Kiev and its allies.

On the other hand, the publication believes that “maybe it’s time to think more seriously about long-term plans for the war, and therefore the solution of the issue of a peaceful settlement around Ukraine may be an option.”

And Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously acknowledged the low pace of the counter-offensive, promising to accelerate it in the near future, based on the fact that the people of Kiev are gradually overcoming the minefield barrier.

And CNN, citing Western officials and a senior Pentagon official, said that the Ukrainian counterattack was not as successful as Kyiv’s allies had expected, and that the performance of Russian forces exceeded their expectations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed the failure of the Ukrainian counterattack and inflicted heavy losses on Kyiv in the form of tens of thousands of troops.
