American journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, who led the investigation into the Watergate scandal that forced President Richard Nixon to resign, warned against “artificial intelligence.”
The rapid spread of artificial intelligence has raised concerns about job losses, privacy, and the potential for disinformation to spread.
Bernstein said that AI is a “tremendous force” that is challenging the future of journalism, noting that “truth is the essence of everything in life.”
“We need to know what is true and what is false. Journalism is an essential component of society to be able to achieve this,” he stressed. Asked why anyone should become a reporter today, he said he had to find “the best version of the truth available.”
Regarding a thread created by the Chat GPT program that uses artificial intelligence about them and which stated that they “inspired a new generation of journalists and set a new standard for investigative journalism”, Bernstein said he was unimpressed by what was being reported and described it as “a mixture of what they wrote about us.” He believed that “artificial intelligence is a huge force that we will face in this world.”
Woodward, in turn, discussed the limitations of AI: “I can call the Pentagon and say that I would like to speak to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and he will either talk or not. you can’t do that,” he said.
