When Apple released the iPhone 13 Pro last year, some users found that the larger camera module made the phone difficult to charge with Apple’s MagSafe Duo charger when the phone was in a case. For those who use a MagSafe Duo charger, the bigger rear camera on the iPhone 14 Pro has made the problem even more apparent.
The iPhone 14 Pro isn’t exactly compatible with Apple’s MagSafe Duo either, according to some users who posted complaints on the official Apple Support forum. Even without a case, the Pro models this year’s camera module has grown noticeably larger, making it difficult for the device to align perfectly with the magnetic charger.
MagSafe Duo can still be used to recharge the iPhone 14 Pro, but it doesn’t lay flat on the charger, and some of it is slightly lifted. Before placing the iPhone on the MagSafe Duo charger, those with phone cases with a larger bump near the camera may need to remove the case.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max owners are unaffected even though the phone also has a larger camera module because it is much taller than the standard Pro model.
On the Apple Support forum, a user complained that “the camera lip is [too] far down, and the phone does not sit properly.” Apple should address this, said a different customer. But unfortunately, there are not many users can do at this point other than look for alternatives to MagSafe Duo.
Apple’s MagSafe Duo needs an upgrade.
In 2020, Apple made the MagSafe Duo charger available to those who wanted to charge their iPhone and Apple Watch at the same time. But since then, Apple hasn’t released a new iteration of the charger. It’s important to note that the MagSafe Duo Charger does not support the fast Apple Watch charging available for models of the Series 7 and later.
The FCC received a revised MagSafe charger application in 2021, but it was never released. Despite the fit issues, Apple claims on its website that MagSafe Duo is compatible with every model in the iPhone 14 lineup. Although the accessory costs $129, you can find it for less at places like Amazon.
