US diplomat rules out US-China crisis over Pelosi visit to Taiwan

US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns said the US does not believe in a crisis in relations between Washington and Beijing due to the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.

Burns stressed in an interview with CNN: “We do not believe that there will be a crisis in US-China relations because of this visit … a peaceful visit by the speaker of the House of Representatives to Taiwan.”

“Beijing must now convince the rest of the world that it will act peacefully in the future,” he added.

China, which considers Taiwan one of its provinces, condemned Pelosi’s visit, seeing in this step US support for Taiwanese separatism and interference in its internal affairs, and began large-scale military exercises around the island of Taiwan.

Pelosi’s August 2-3 visit to Taiwan was the first visit by a speaker of the US House of Representatives to Taiwan since 1997, making her the highest-ranking US official to visit the island in 25 years.
