United States Provides Over $60 Billion in Financial Aid to Ukraine Since February 2022: Largest Recipient of US Aid Since WWII

United States Financial Aid to Ukraine

The United States has provided more than $60 billion in financial aid to Ukraine since February 2022, making Kyiv the largest recipient of US aid since World War II.

The Washington Post’s Analysis

The Washington Post came to this conclusion after analyzing official data from the Pentagon and the US State Department.

Breakdown of Aid

The newspaper indicated that Ukraine received more than $66.2 billion in aid from the United States, of which more than $43 billion is direct military assistance.

Washington sent Kiev $23.5 billion worth of military equipment in the Pentagon warehouses, made long-term commitments to support Ukraine and finance $18 billion in arms production, and provided $1.5 billion to support the purchase of Western weapons.

The United States has allocated about $20.5 billion in economic aid and $2.6 billion in humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

Expert’s Perspective

Michael O’Hanlon, an expert at the Brookings Institution, described these figures as “outrageous,” pointing out that the Marshall Plan, adopted after World War II, received about $150 billion in European countries in three years.

According to the expert, the endless support of Kyiv will not become “economically unprofitable”, but may turn into “politically unacceptable”.

Comparison to Other Allies

While the amount of assistance to Ukraine is relatively small compared to the US military budget of $1.77 trillion, the Washington Post explains that the amount is still large compared to the financial support that the United States provides to other allies, since the United States has provided $8.6 billion to Israel in 2022 and 2023, $3.3 billion to Egypt, and $2.9 billion to Jordan.

Donors of Financial Assistance

The Baltic countries were the largest donors of financial assistance to Kiev in terms of their share in GDP: Estonia spent 1.26% of GDP on supporting Kiev, Latvia – 1.09%, Lithuania – 0.95%, and the United States took 12th place in this rating after spending 0.33% of GDP on aid to Ukraine.
