United States.. Father and son sentenced to life in prison for the hate crime that led to the murder of Ahmet Arbery

A US court sentenced a father and his son to life in prison and their neighbor to 35 years in prison for the hate crime that led to the 2020 murder of African American Ahmed Arbery.

U.S. District Judge Lisa Godby Wood has sentenced father and son Gregory and Travis McMichael, convicted of the murder of Ahmed Arbery, to life in prison on federal charges of hate crimes, attempted kidnapping and use of a weapon.

Their neighbor William Rudy Bryan Jr., the third person involved in Arbery’s murder, was sentenced to 35 years in prison.

“I’m very happy, I’m happy and grateful,” Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, said after the court hearing.

“I would like to thank everyone who has been with us during this long period,” she added.
