UN: Almost a million people affected by floods in South Sudan

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said the death toll from the floods in South Sudan was about 909,000, double the estimates released last month.

A statement from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, OCHA, pointed to “reports that floods have killed livestock and damaged crops, eroded roads and bridges, and destroyed homes, schools and health facilities.” structures, as well as flooding of wells and discharges of sewage, which has led to water pollution and the risk of outbreaks of waterborne diseases.” ten states of the country.

The oil-rich state of Unity is one of the areas hardest hit by the floods. Rising water levels damaged dams in two areas last Sunday, threatening to flood displaced persons camps and the base of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.

The office indicated that “Efforts are underway around the clock to repair where needed and monitor any shortcomings to anticipate further damage.”

And OCHA reported that heavy rains in the state of Bahr el Ghazal in the west of the country led to the collapse of a major bridge, preventing needed aid from reaching communities, exacerbating their suffering.

Previous UN agency estimates indicated that about 386,000 people were affected by the floods in seven states.
