Uganda prepares for a tragic start to the new year

Nine people died during a New Year’s Eve stampede in front of a shopping center in the Ugandan capital Kampala on Sunday.

According to Ugandan police, the accident occurred in front of the Freedom City center in Kampala after fireworks were set off to mark the start of the new year, killing 9 people and injuring several others.

The police explained that the accident occurred as a result of a stampede, which occurred due to negligence and recklessness on the part of the youth, and did not specify any other details.

Notably, Uganda’s New Year’s celebration this year was the first in 3 years, following the lifting of restrictions imposed to combat the Covid-19 pandemic and other security concerns.
