UFC commentator condemns calls to release US basketball player held in Russia

American actor and UFC commentator Joe Rogan commented on calls to return basketball player Britney Grainer detained in Russia to the United States.

Rogan was surprised by activists’ calls for a possible exchange between Grainer, imprisoned in Moscow, and Russian businessman Viktor Bout, imprisoned in Washington.

Rogan protested during the broadcast podcast His own: “They say Russia should let Grenier go, but here (in the USA) a lot of people are imprisoned for using marijuana, and they sit for years, what’s the difference ?!”

Rogan stressed that he advocates the decriminalization of marijuana possession, and noted that in the US tens of thousands of people received prison terms for possession of cannabis.

The Phoenix Mercury women’s basketball player was detained at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow last February on charges of trying to smuggle drugs into Russia.

E-cigarettes and cannabis oil were found in Grenier’s bags, according to Russian customs.

Grenier, who pleaded guilty to the charges, faces five to ten years in prison.

Earlier, the White House said that the United States made a “serious” offer to Russia to return Greiner and another prisoner.

With Team USA, Grenier won the 2014 World Championship in Turkey, the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the 2018 World Championship in Spain and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Before her arrest, she played for the UMMC team from Yekaterinburg, Russia.
