Former US President Donald Trump has confirmed that the investigation against him in New York is politically motivated and linked to his intention to run in the US presidential election.
“I am being investigated for something that is not a crime or even a misdemeanor or treason,” Trump said at a rally in Texas.
He emphasized that the accusation is purely political in nature and is related to his intention to run for president in 2024.
Trump caused a major media stir by posting on his Truth Social platform that he would be formally charged and “arrested,” but it was unclear when any charges would be filed.
The New York investigation is linked to accusations that Trump gave porn actress Stormy Daniels money to buy her silence during his 2016 White House campaign.
Trump sought to portray the Manhattan affair as politically motivated and used it to raise funds and rally supporters.
On Friday, he issued a dire warning that the country would witness possible “death and destruction” if he was accused of the crime.
Trump’s rallies usually attract thousands of supporters to see him in person, and he continues to hold rallies even after he has left office.
