Trudeau confirms it will not be easy to export Canadian gas to Germany

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stressed that exporting Canadian gas to Germany would not be easy, even if Berlin wants to diversify its sources of supply to reduce dependence on Russia.

At a press conference in Montreal with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visiting Canada, Trudeau played down the prospects for liquefied natural gas exports, pointing out the long distance between the country’s western fields and Atlantic coast ports.

“We are in the process of exploring opportunities to see if it makes sense to export LNG and if it is possible to export it directly to Europe,” Trudeau said.

For his part, Schultz stressed that his country is accelerating the construction of port infrastructure and gas pipelines in order to increase imports of liquefied natural gas and is open to countries such as Canada.

He said that Germany wants to end “dependence on Russian gas supplies.”
