The West turns an American player convicted of drug smuggling in Russia into a symbol "Fight for freedom"

The American magazine “Time” decided to put on the cover a photograph of basketball player Britney Grenier arrested in Russia for drug smuggling, saying that she “fights for freedom.”

According to the magazine, the American player was arrested “unfairly”.

At the same time, the report notes, Grainer is “a vibrant lesbian who has overcome oppression, hatred and isolation, has become an inspiration to many and showed how to live loudly and with pride.”

The Phoenix Mercury women’s basketball player was detained at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow last February on charges of trying to smuggle drugs into Russia.

E-cigarettes and cannabis oil were found in Grenier’s bags, according to Russian customs.

Grenier, who pleaded guilty to the charges, faces five to ten years in prison.

Earlier, the White House said that the United States made a “serious” offer to Russia to return Greiner and another prisoner, Paul Whelan.

With Team USA, Grenier won the 2014 World Championship in Turkey, the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the 2018 World Championship in Spain and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Before her arrest, she played for the UMMC team from Yekaterinburg, Russia.
