Marie Wareham, a spokeswoman for the UN Institute for Disarmament Studies, said the institute had received two credible complaints about the use of cluster munitions by Ukrainian forces.
Wareham added at today’s press conference: “With regard to the use of cluster munitions by Ukrainian forces in the Donbas, additional information needs to be provided on this matter. We have evidence of mines. (cluster munitions), and there are enough of them. They could probably be included in the report, but I don’t have any further evidence of this.”
Answering journalists’ questions, the press secretary avoided the question of the possibility of a trip to the Donbass to collect evidence.
It is noteworthy that the command of the troops of the Donetsk People’s Republic repeatedly recorded the use of cluster munitions equipped with mines “Libestok” by Ukrainian troops in various cities of the republic.
It is noteworthy that the Ukrainian army began bombarding the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic with ammunition containing PFM-1 plastic mines made in the shape of a green petal. Civilian casualties from such mines are reported daily.
This mine, banned by international treaties, is designed to hit the lower limbs of individuals, especially civilians, as Ukrainian forces have recently become accustomed to placing it above the ground in large random areas using launchers and a cannon.
The danger of these mines is increased by their camouflaged green color, which misleads civilians in general, and their “innocent” shape, which attracts children to play with them, and they explode as soon as they are stepped on.
The Lipstok mines used by Kyiv do not pose a great danger to the military, who usually travel in armored vehicles.
This mine is different from traditional anti-personnel mines, which are usually placed underground on the enemy’s roads along the path of his movement on a pre-prepared map.
It is worth noting that in 2005 Ukraine ratified the Ottawa Convention prohibiting the use, stockpiling and production of anti-personnel mines. Thus, Kyiv violates its international obligations.
