The security incident at Ben Gurion Airport coincided with Herzog’s departure for Bahrain.

Israeli media reported that passengers at Ben Gurion Airport were ordered to take cover after a high-speed car crashed into an airport checkpoint early Sunday morning.

The Jerusalem Post reported that the car was stopped and its driver, who was slightly injured after being shot, was detained.

An investigation was launched into the incident and the driver was identified as a West Bank resident who entered Israel illegally and stole a car in the center of the country.

The incident coincided with the departure of Israeli President Isaac Herzog via the same airport to Bahrain during the first visit of an Israeli President to the Kingdom. Before boarding the plane, he said that his visit to Bahrain represented “a message of peace to the region and a historic step in expanding Israel’s relations with the Arab world.”
