US State Department spokesman Ned Price said the closure of camps hosting ISIS members and their families in Syria depends on countries accepting the return of their citizens from elements of the organization.
Price responded to a question about what the US State Department is doing to empty the camps: “We are showing the nations of the world that the only sustainable solution is to return them to their countries of origin, and we appreciate the efforts of many countries that have accepted the return of their citizens from concentration camps … We believe that this is the only way to accomplish this task.”
Price noted that they are doing everything possible to make this happen.
He added that his country’s fear of rising extremism among those in detention camps is one of the reasons it seeks to steadily reduce the number of those in it.
The UN estimates that the Al-Hol camp is home to over 70,000 people, which can only accommodate 10,000 people, 90 percent of whom are women and children.
