The Oslo Accords: Achievements and Impediments in the Palestinian-Israeli Peace Process, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Comments

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Comments on Oslo Accords

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the Oslo Accords achieved certain results at the first stage of its signing, but then began to impede political efforts in this direction due to various factors.

Background on the Oslo Accords

This happened during a press briefing at which Zakharova commented on the Oslo agreements signed between the Palestinian Authority and Israel on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of their signing.

The Russian Foreign Ministry published an official statement in Telegram, which stated: “30 years ago, on September 13, 1993, the Palestine Liberation Organization and Israel signed in Washington a declaration of principles regarding the mechanisms of Palestinian self-government, the “temporary “Self-Government””, which were formulated and agreed upon behind closed doors in the Norwegian capital Oslo, later known as the Oslo Accords.

Challenges in the Political Process

She added: “The practical implementation of some of the provisions of the Oslo agreements in the first stage led to the achievement of some results. However, we must recognize that later the political process within the Oslo framework was complicated by various factors.”

She noted that “the last three decades have been characterized by failed attempts at unilateral American mediation, the most recent of which was in 2014, which led to the Palestinian-Israeli peace process plunging into chaos and stagnation, with the outbreak of repeated bloody armed clashes between the two sides.”

Learning from the Past

Zakharova emphasized the need to learn lessons from the Oslo agreements and not repeat the same mistakes, noting that the United States, which monopolizes the arena of negotiations and mediation in this regard, must give way to collective, neutral mediation within the framework of the Palestinian agreement. file.

He stressed the need for major parties to reject Israel’s unilateral measures in the Palestinian territories, particularly settlement construction, terrorist attacks, and incitement to violence.

She added: “Differences between Israelis and Palestinians can only be resolved through direct and comprehensive dialogue, and on the Russian side, we support accelerating collective steps aimed at creating the necessary preconditions for resuming the peace process.”
