The Night of the Coronation in Barcelona: Joy Tainted by Incompleteness

Ferran Olivia, the star of FC Barcelona and the captain of Spain’s 1964 UEFA European Football Championship, died Sunday at the age of 86.

Olivia died the same day Barcelona won their 27th La Liga title.

FC Barcelona extends its condolences to the family and friends of Ferran Olivia, a former player at the club from 1956 to 1969. Rest in peace,” the Barcelona website says.

He added, “During his time as a player, he was a top-notch defender.”

The former Barcelona defender, who played more than 500 matches with the Catalan giants, won the Spanish championship twice (1959 and 1960) and lifted the Copa del Rey four times (1957, 1959, 1963 and 1968).
