Bundestag Deputy Highlights Russian Gas as the Best Option for Europe

Bundestag deputy from the far-right Alternative for Germany party Stephen Cotteri said that there is no alternative to Russian gas in Europe either in terms of price or reliability of supplies.

Challenging the EU’s Intention to Import Gas from Nigeria

The MP said in an interview with the Russian TASS news agency that “Russian gas cannot be replaced either by low price or by reliability of supply,” adding that “it is impossible to build long-term stable relationships with suppliers from an unstable desert region or countries” – referring to the EU’s plan to import gas from Nigeria via the Trans-Saharan pipeline.

Questioning the Viability of the Trans-Saharan Pipeline

“The serious desire for this indicates the childishness of German and European politics, which ignores reality,” Cotteri added.

He pointed out that the idea of building this gas pipeline has not yet been implemented, despite the fact that many years have passed since its inception.

“African gas should stay in Africa because other African countries need it more,” he added.

Delays and Resumption of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Project

It is noteworthy that an agreement on the construction of a trans-Saharan gas pipeline from Nigeria to Algeria through the Niger with a length of 4,000 km and a cost of $10 billion was signed back in 2009, but the launch of the project was postponed several times.

In July 2022, against the background of the energy crisis in Europe, Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria signed a memorandum to resume work on the project.
