However, in the days that followed Madeline’s death and burial, Roderick’s mental state steadily deteriorated, and he eventually disclosed his horrifying suspicion that Madeline was still alive but was imprisoned in the tomb. The narrative observes Madeline’s bloody homecoming and her attack on her brother before the narrator flees for his life. And he observes, from a safe distance, as the home disintegrates into two pieces and falls into a lake.
