"Taliban" Afghan women banned from working for local and international NGOs

The Taliban government’s economy ministry announced that Afghan women would be banned from working for local and international NGOs after “complaints” about their failure to comply with the dress code.

“Serious complaints have been received about non-compliance with Islamic hijabs and other rules and regulations regarding the work of women in local and international organizations,” according to a letter seen by AFP, the ministry responsible for approving licenses for NGOs operating in Afghanistan.

In its announcement, the ministry added: “If the directive is ignored, the organization’s license will be revoked.”

A ministry spokesperson also confirmed that the question was addressed to NGOs.

The announcement comes just four days after the Taliban government decided to ban Afghan women from public and private universities indefinitely, as Higher Education Minister Nada Muhammad Nadeem justified the decision by not complying with the hijab directive.
