Taiwan President warns of real danger of Chinese invasion

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen warned of the real danger of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

“It’s true that this can happen to us, so we need to be prepared for it,” Tsai told The Atlantic.

“There is a real danger,” she added. “And it’s not just about making a fuss.”

Remarkably, an independent government has ruled Taiwan since 1949, when the Kuomintang Nationalist Party was defeated in a civil war with the Communists and its leadership retreated to an island that Beijing considers part of Chinese territory.

Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated at the 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party in October last year that China will strive to ensure unity with Taiwan through peaceful means, but does not promise to rule out the use of force to resolve the problem.

The situation around Taiwan escalated after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island in early August, when China protested the move and held military exercises near Taiwan.
