Sudan: Arab League calls for temporary humanitarian ceasefire

Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit welcomed the temporary humanitarian truce in Sudan, considering it necessary and an important step for the civilian population and humanitarian emergencies.

A spokesman for the Secretary General, Jamal Rushdie, said that Abul Gheith mentioned this in a telephone conversation with the chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki.

He added that during the telephone conversation, views were exchanged on the dangerous situation in Sudan and what can be done in coordination between the two regional organizations to stop the escalation and restore calm.

The spokesman added that both sides believe that the language of dialogue should prevail as a way to solve problems in order to save the Sudanese from blood and preserve the unity of the country.

Rushdie stressed that the Arab League and the African Union have a long history of working together and coordinating regarding Sudan and other issues of concern between the two organizations, adding that Abul Gheit and Faki agreed to continue to coordinate and exchange views on the situation in Sudan in the coming days.
