South Korea officially bid to host the 2023 AFC Asian Cup on Thursday after China pulled out due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Korea Football Association said.
“Today, the KFA officially submitted a letter of intent to the Asian Football Confederation to host the 2023 Asian Football Cup,” the KFA said in a Twitter post.
“South Korea is trying to host and win the Asian Cup for the first time in 63 years! We ask for your support and attention!”
The tournament was scheduled to be held in 10 cities in China between June 16 and July 16, 2023 with 24 teams, but China apologized in mid-May for not hosting it due to the effects of the “Covid-19” pandemic.
The Asian Football Confederation then opened the doors to its member associations to express their desire to host a four-year tournament, noting that interested countries must submit their nominations by June 30 before extending the deadline to the middle of next month.
