The Prime Minister of the federal state of Saxony in Germany, Michael Kretschmer, said in an interview with the newspaper Zeit that Germany will not be able to abandon Russian gas over the next five years.
Kretschmer stressed the need for the German government to accept this “bitter reality”.
He added: “If we realize that we cannot do without Russian gas at the moment, this is a bitter reality, and we must come to terms with this. In the coming years, we will still need Russian gas, and we must use existing nuclear power plants. and phasing out the use of coal.”
The Prime Minister of Saxony noted that his compatriots are still not fully aware of the consequences of high gas prices. He noted that in Germany, however, they started talking about the need to create heating points so that “people do not have to freeze in their apartments.” “Our entire economic system is in danger of collapse,” he said.
Kretschmer added that he considers the position “to permanently abandon raw materials from Russia” to be erroneous.
Earlier, Vice-Chancellor, Minister of Economy of Germany Robert Habek said that Germany “with lightning speed” gets rid of dependence on Russian energy resources, and serious changes are expected in the German energy sector in the next two years.
