Yasen-M Submarines to be Equipped with Zircon Hypersonic Missiles

Introduction

Aleksey Rakhmanov, CEO of the Russian United Shipbuilding Company, confirmed that Yasen-M project 885 nuclear submarines will be equipped with Zircon hypersonic missiles.

Rakhmanov’s Statement

Rakhmanov said: “In pursuance of the decision of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Yasen-M multi-purpose nuclear submarines will be equipped with the Zirkon missile system. Work in this direction is underway.”

Admiral Gorshkov Frigate

He pointed out that the first Russian ship equipped with Zircon hypersonic missiles is the Admiral Gorshkov frigate.

He added: “The armament of frigates with these complexes will take place in accordance with the plan of the Russian Ministry of Defense during the construction and operation of frigates.”

Current Armament

Currently, nuclear submarines of the Yassen type are armed with Caliber and Onyx cruise missiles and Physicist-type torpedoes.

Yasen-class Submarines

Yasen-class submarines are designed to attack carrier battle groups and can destroy enemy ballistic missile submarines, attack submarines, and ships, while Yasen-M can attack coastal targets such as naval bases and ports.

The ability of the Yasen submarines to hit land targets is of particular concern to both military experts and Western officials, and they are also known in NATO as the Severodvinsk-class submarines.
