Russian Foreign Ministry calls for stronger legal lifting of sanctions on fertilizers

Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said that Russia would seek to change the rules to strengthen the law on the withdrawal of Russian food and fertilizers from sanctions.

Groshko said: “The main document is a memorandum concluded between Russia and the UN on the removal of all obstacles to trade in agricultural and food products, including grain and fertilizers.”

He added: “We are constantly striving for the full implementation of this memorandum, and the EU countries have provided a definite answer, but it was expressed in changes or clarifications provided by the European Commission to the already approved rules. We continue to insist that this response be given not through clarifications that have no legal force, but through changes in regulations and the removal of Russian food and fertilizers from sanctions.”

Earlier media reported that six EU countries, including France and Germany, called on Brussels to change sanctions against Russia so as not to impede the supply of food and fertilizer.

Although the European Commission has made recommendations to allow the transport of Russian grain and fertilizer, many governments and transport operators say they are not trusted enough to guarantee legal protection.
