The Russian Federal Security Service foils terrorist attack planned by Ukrainian nationalists

The Russian Federal Security Service announced today, Tuesday, the detention of a resident of the Kaluga region, southwest of Moscow, who was preparing to carry out a terrorist attack led by Ukrainian nationalists.

Preparations for a terrorist attack

“The defendants, on the instructions of (Ukrainian) militants, have completed preparations for committing a terrorist act on one of the vital infrastructure facilities of Kaluga,” the Russian security forces said in a statement.

According to the statement, it was established that the detainee himself initiated contact with representatives of the extremist Ukrainian battalion “Azov” and was going to leave for Ukraine to participate in hostilities in the ranks of the Ukrainian armed forces.

Components for making a primitive bomb were found in his hideout, and his electronic devices contained instructions and correspondence with the person in charge of him from the Ukrainian side.

Criminal case and confession

A criminal case has been initiated against the detainee on charges of preparing for high treason, committing a terrorist attack, participating in the activities of a terrorist organization, and undergoing training for terrorist purposes.

The Russian special services published a video in which the defendant makes a confession, where he said that after the start of the special operation, he began to assist “an organization located on the territory of Ukraine”, transferring money to it. Then a man named Taras contacted him and instructed him to collect the components of an explosive device and place them in caches.

After completing the mission, he was instructed to leave Russia, and while trying to get out of the country, he was arrested by Russian security forces.
