Russia opposes virtual participation of Zelensky in the meeting of the UN Security Council

Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Security Council Vasily Nebenzya objected to the hypothetical participation of Vladimir Zelensky in a meeting of the UN Security Council, demanding that his participation be in person.

Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Security Council Vasily Nebenzya objected to the participation of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, relatively speaking, in a meeting of the UN Security Council, demanding that his participation be in person.

Earlier, China’s Permanent Representative to the UN and Chairman of the Security Council in August, Zhang Jun, said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would speak at the council meeting via a video clip, adding: “We have received an offer from the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to invite the President of Ukraine to attend a meeting of the UN Security Council through the video.

The Permanent Representative of Russia opposed Zelensky’s participation in this formula, since it contradicted the requirements of the Security Council protocol, and the issue was put to a procedural vote.

“Russia objects to Zelensky’s hypothetical participation in the UN Security Council meeting, which should be in person,” Nebenzya said.

13 members of the Security Council voted in favor of participation, Russia opposed, China abstained.
