Rishi Sunak: I’m the only one who can beat the leader of the Labor Party

Former British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, leader of the Conservative Party and prime minister, has said he is the only candidate capable of defeating Labor leader Keir Starmer in the upcoming general election.

“Now the party members are faced with the question: who is best able to defeat Keir Starmer and Labor in the upcoming elections? I am the only candidate who can do this,” Sunak said in a statement.

He stressed that he would work to address the challenges facing the UK “honestly and responsibly” as he pledged to “support the people… to grow our economy and enjoy the freedoms that Britain’s exit from the European Union gives us.”

The Conservative MPs reportedly chose Sunak and Secretary of State Liz Terrace as party and government candidates in the presidential election.

Sunak led the last five rounds of the Conservative MPs and the last round held yesterday Wednesday with 137 votes ahead of Terrace with 113 votes, while Secretary of State for Commerce Penny Mordaunt was expelled after receiving 105 votes. .

Yesterday’s vote was the fifth and last, with about 200,000 party organizations choosing a leader by mail-in voting. The result will be announced on September 5 next year.

Notably, this internal vote within the Conservative Party came after Boris Johnson announced his resignation as prime minister on July 7 following a spate of resignations in his government following a series of scandals.
