Report: Taliban faction seeks to establish covert relations with Israel

According to Israeli media reports, the Afghan Taliban movement is reconsidering its position towards Israel.

The Israeli channel i24NEWS quoted a former Afghan official who was involved in negotiations with the Taliban government as saying: “At the initial stages, they are interested in establishing secret relations with Israel in order to see if these negotiations will be successful in the future. next few years or not.

He argued that the ultimate goal of this shadowy diplomacy was to conclude a bilateral agreement between Israel and Afghanistan.

But the former Afghan official pointed out that the policy was not the official position of the Taliban government, but rather an opinion shared by some members of the movement. The faction that supports this political orientation consists of about 200 people at various levels of the Islamist group, including high-ranking officials.

“From their point of view, strengthening and supporting the Taliban regime requires building strong relationships with the great powers of the region, of which Israel is a part,” the source explained.

The source added in an interview with i24NEWS that he was in contact with the Israeli activist and said, “Israel is strong and influential in the Middle East and the global economic arena.”

He pointed out that “some Islamic countries have established relations with Israel because it is in their national interests, and we also have our own interests”, referring to Abraham’s agreements.

Last month, the Qatari channel Al Jazeera asked Dr. Muhammad Naeem, a spokesman for the Politburo of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, whether the Taliban ruled out establishing relations with Israel. He replied: “What problem can we face with Israel? The next thing we ask is if We were ready to deal with Mars.”

Just over a year ago, in September 2021, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told Russia’s Sputnik news agency that the Taliban were keen to improve relations with the US and other countries of the world, but ruled out diplomatic contacts with Israel.

But he has since softened his tone, noting that rapprochement with the Jewish state is no longer entirely utopian.
