Queen Elizabeth formally instructs Liz Terrace to form a new government.

Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday officially instructed Liz Terrace to form a new British government.

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss won the Conservative Party leadership on Monday to lead the new UK government, succeeding Boris Johnson.

As leader of the largest party in the House of Commons, Truss will serve as prime minister until the next general election, due in December 2024.

Contrary to tradition, for the first time in the 70-year reign of Elizabeth II, power is transferred at the Queen’s residence, Balmoral, and not at Buckingham Palace in London. The change of venue sparked rumors about the health of the 96-year-old queen.
