Putin attends Shanghai Organization’s Council of Heads of State Meeting

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin will take part in a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

The summit is taking place this year virtually via videoconference, chaired by India and with the participation of the leaders of member states, namely Russia, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, with Belarus as observer countries. , Iran and Mongolia.

The summit will also feature Turkmen President Sardar Berdimuhamedov as a guest and a speech by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Zhang Ming and Director of the Executive Committee of the Regional Anti-Terrorism Directorate of the organization Ruslan Mirzoev will present their reports at the summit.

The summit will also be attended by heads of a number of international organizations.

It is expected that at the summit the results of the organization’s work over the past year will be summed up, the main directions of multifaceted and mutually beneficial cooperation within the organization will be determined, and the leaders will exchange views on topical international and regional issues.

Earlier, the Kremlin’s press service reported that at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, much attention would be paid to the expansion of the organization, since it is planned to complete the process of Iran’s accession to it and start the process of Belarus’s accession.

The leaders focus on the development of mechanisms to combat terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking and international crime.

The summit is scheduled to sign the New Delhi Declaration and many other documents. The joint statement will include coordinated positions on topical issues of the regional and international agenda, and a strategy for the economic development of the OIC countries until 2030 will be signed.

Next year will be declared by FAO as the “Year of the Environment”. Following the summit, Kazakhstan will assume the chairmanship of the organization from 2023 to 2024.
