Power outages in Pakistan

The Federal Department of Energy said that on Monday morning, Pakistan experienced a nationwide power outage due to a major failure in the national power grid.

“According to preliminary information, around 7:34 (local time) there was a loss of frequency in the national network, which led to a serious outage. Operational work is underway to restore the system,” the ministry said in a statement.

Power was turned off in all major cities including Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar.

Electricity Minister Khurum Dastager told Geo TV that a frequency mismatch was reported in the southern part of the country between the cities of Jamsuru and Dadu when the systems were turned on on Monday morning.

“There were voltage fluctuations, and the systems turned off one by one. This is not a big crisis,” Dastager added. Noting that some networks in the country have already been restored.
