Portugal opposes EU ban on entry of Russian citizens

The Portuguese Foreign Ministry said that Lisbon opposes a ban on the entry of all Russian citizens into the European Union.

“Portugal believes that the main target of the sanctions regime should be the Russian military machine, not the Russian people,” a spokesman for the foreign ministry told the ECO newspaper.

He added that Portugal will take part in the discussion of this issue during an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Prague on August 30-31.

“Portugal will participate in discussions on this issue at the European level to help formulate a common position for EU member states,” he said.

Notably, some European countries have called for a halt to the issuance of entry visas to Russian citizens and imposed travel and residency restrictions on their territory as part of their sanctions policy against Moscow in the wake of its military operation in Ukraine. .
