Polish President: Merkel supports "Nord Stream-2" hostile action

Polish President Andrzej Duda considered it a mistake to support the Nord Stream 2 project for many years by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“The Nord Stream gas projects are a big shame for Germany on my part,” Duda told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper published on Tuesday.

He added: “We have always heard that Nord Stream is just a commercial project that cannot be influenced. I didn’t agree with this before. Then there was an agreement between President (American Joe) Biden and Merkel on Washington’s refusal to oppose Nord Stream 2. On the same evening, Merkel called (Russian President Vladimir) Putin. This shocked me. This should be understood not only as an act of indifference, but as an act of almost hostile attitude towards our part of Europe.”

The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is fully built, but not yet opened. His testimony had already been suspended under the supervision of incumbent German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on February 22, after Russia recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.

Angela Merkel is currently under fire for Germany’s past policy towards Russia. Some accuse Merkel of supporting the Nord Stream 2 project, as well as opposing Ukraine’s entry into the alliance at the NATO summit in Bucharest in 2008.
