Philippines guarantees China that US bases in its territory won’t be utilized for attacking them

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that he had assured China that the bases his country provided to the US military would not be used to attack any country.

“The Philippines has given the United States 4 new bases,” said Markus of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. “I have assured Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang that they will not become military outposts to attack anyone.”

He added: “The United States has never claimed that these sites could be used to launch an attack. This is not their purpose and they will not be used in this way.”

He stressed that the United States did not ask the Philippines to provide troops in the event of a conflict with China over Taiwan.

Last February, the US and the Philippines reached an agreement to establish 4 new US military bases in the Philippines as part of a multi-year security alliance.
