Peskov: The reaction of Kyiv and the West to the Russian initiative to ceasefire on Christmas Eve is incomprehensible

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin cannot explain the reaction of Kyiv and the West to the ceasefire in Ukraine on Christmas Eve and considers it incomprehensible and unjustified.

This was in response to the question of whether Russia would come up with a new ceasefire initiative and whether it would regret the ceasefire on New Year’s Eve?

Peskov stressed that the Russian initiative for a ceasefire on Christmas Eve was based on humanitarian motives in order to enable Christians to celebrate Christmas on January 7 and pray in churches.

He added: “If one person can celebrate Christmas and pray, then this means that the Russian open fire initiative has achieved its goals.”

It is noteworthy that Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Russian Ministry of Defense to cease fire along the line of contact in Ukraine from 12:00 on January 6 to 00:00 on January 7.

For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed the Russian initiative over Christmas, calling it a “cover” to reinforce Russian troops along the front line.
