Pentagon: China will not try to control Taiwan by force

Colin Kahl, deputy head of the US military, expressed the Pentagon’s confidence that China would not try to regain control of Taiwan by force in the coming years.

Asked if the United States anticipates attempts to forcibly return Taiwan to Chinese control in the coming years, Cale replied, “No.”

Kal noted that the US is taking the position that neither Beijing nor Taipei should try to change the status quo with respect to Taiwan. The Vice President of the Pentagon stressed that the crisis associated with the visit of the speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan is the work of Beijing. “Nothing about this visit changes US policy towards China,” he said.

“China’s response was over the top,” Cale added, noting that “the People’s Republic of China is trying to subdue Taiwan and the international community. It won’t work.”

Earlier, CIA Director William Burns said the question is not whether China decides to use force against Taiwan, but “how and when they do so.”
