Over 60 individuals apprehended in Brussels following violent protests

Belgian police said they arrested 64 people during riots that broke out in Brussels on Thursday.

“Young people gathered in many districts of the city and staged provocations, as a result of which 47 minors and 16 adults were detained and placed under administrative arrest,” the media reported, citing police sources.

The media indicated that the situation was especially tense in the Anisense and South Station area, where a large number of policemen were stationed.

A group of young people set fire to and in some areas tried to cordon off the main corridor.

Police said they took immediate action to address the violations and by midnight the situation had stabilized.

Sources from the French-speaking community in Belgium, most of whom are from North Africa, said the unrest was due to what is happening in France.

Street riots began in France on June 27 after police officers killed a 17-year-old driver of a Mercedes in Nanterre.

The unrest soon spread to the communes and other major cities such as Toulouse, Lyon, Marseille and Strasbourg.
