Norwegian wins Zagreb Chess Grand Prix

Norwegian Magnus Carlsen won the SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz Croatia title on Sunday, in the third round of the Grand Chess Tour 2022, which was held in Croatia.

Magnus Carlsen, the World Chess Champion, finished first in the tournament with 22.5 points, followed by France’s Alireza Firouzja and America’s Wesley Sue in second and third respectively with 21 points each.

Another Frenchman, Maxime Vache-Lagrave, finished fourth with 21 points.

Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi finished fifth with 20 points, losing twice to Carlsen in this tournament.

The next stage of the Grand Chess Tour will take place from 24 to 31 August in the United States of America.

It is noteworthy that Magnus Carlsen announced last Wednesday that he was refusing to face Ian Nepomniachtchi to defend the world chess title, arguing that he had no motivation to play another match for the world title.

The 31-year-old Norwegian champion defended the 2021 world title by defeating Jan Nepomniasha for the fourth time in his history since he snatched it from Indian champion Viswanathan Anand in 2013.

Nipomnyashi will face the Chinese champion Ding Liren, who finished second in the World Championship Candidates Tournament after Magnus Carlsen’s refusal.
