Non-Governmental Organizations to Welcome Women as Taliban Permits Employment

International aid sources have announced that Taliban officials have confirmed in their recent meetings with international bodies that the movement is in the process of enabling Afghan women to resume work in the country’s non-governmental organizations.

Last December, the Taliban banned Afghan women from working for non-governmental organizations because they do not wear the hijab properly and do not follow gender segregation rules.

And the Taliban said last April that the ban has been extended to United Nations offices and agencies in Afghanistan, but there are exceptions in certain sectors such as health and education.

Jan Egeland, general secretary of the Norwegian Refugee Council, is visiting Afghanistan for the second time in five months to urge the Taliban rulers to lift a ban on the organization’s female employees.
