Moscow: Washington’s claims that sanctions do not prevent START inspections are contrary to reality

Russia’s ambassador to Washington said America’s claims that its sanctions against Russia do not prevent Russian specialists from conducting START-3 inspections of US facilities “are not true.”

Russia’s ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, added that “the US State Department’s statement refuting this is not true,” noting that “the checks are seriously complicated by the sanctions imposed by Washington on Russia … the lack of normal air contacts with the United States.”

He continued: “As well as the closure of American airspace for the transit of Russian aircraft and problems obtaining visas for members of the screening teams and aircrew, all of these issues, according to the ambassador, have created conditions under which it has become difficult to conduct inspections on American soil.” .

He noted that Russia will continue to work with the United States to eliminate existing problems on the issue of mutual inspections under the START Treaty. And Antonov concluded: “Washington must show its commitment to the treaty, not in words, but in deeds.”
