Massive Fire Engulfs Kovaras Forests near Athens, Urgent Evacuation of Resorts Ordered

Today, Monday, in the forests of Kovaras, 50 km east of Athens, a major fire broke out, caused by the speed of strong winds.

The Greek Civil Defense, in an official statement, indicated that the fire was difficult due to strong winds in the area, the speed of which fluctuates between 50-60 km per hour.

He noted that Greece is currently at the center of the fight against fires, and the weather conditions are very difficult and contribute to the outbreak of forest fires.

According to Greek media reports, seven water bombers, four helicopters and 150 firefighters, including a team of 30 Romanian firefighters, are participating in an attempt to put out the fire on two fronts, local media reported.

The fire quickly spread to the south of the Attica region, near the tourist resorts of Lagonisi, Anavyssos and Sarronides, and traffic was blocked on roads adjacent to Calvia, which were covered in a thick cloud of smoke.

And the Greek authorities, as a precautionary measure, ordered the evacuation of many resorts in the region and asked residents to leave the area while one of the monasteries was evacuated.

The Greek agency ANA said another fire broke out in a forested area adjacent to the resort of Loutraki, prompting authorities to evacuate residents of the area as a precaution until fire brigades finish their job. .

Greece has been experiencing a heat wave since last Thursday, with temperatures reaching 44 degrees Celsius in the center of the country.
